Bread on Arrival bakehouse co-owner Molly Ferris has grown used to having an empty nest, but she’s thrilled when her daughter, Chloe, comes home to roost a week before Thanksgiving. Chloe delights in exploring the quaint Scottish town of Loch Mallaig, Michigan, where plenty of other out-of-towners are flocking together for some fall fun. Her joy plummets, however, when a series of alarming incidents indicate that Chloe has ruffled someone’s feathers—unfortunately, the young veterinarian has no idea whose. Chloe’s confusion increases when she discovers that her former flame Camden Landry has followed her from Milwaukee to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Apparently a little bird had told Camden that Chloe was trouble and he wants to apologize for mistreating her, but he never gets the chance. Instead, he dies under suspicious circumstances right in front of Molly and Chloe’s eyes. The police declare foul play, and the Ferris women fly to the top of the suspect list. Egged on by the knowledge that she and Chloe are innocent of any wrongdoing, Molly investigates the murder. Several other visitors from Milwaukee have ties to Camden, so there’s no lack of potential killers—but which one of them murdered him, if any? And is the same person to blame for the other suspicious events disrupting Chloe’s vacation?
